Grant received for trail

DNR gives Weyauwega $25,593 to make launch handicap accessible

The city of Weyauwega has received a $25,593 Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Recreational Boating Facilities Grant.

The grant is going toward the cost of constructing a handicap accessible trail to the city’s new kayak/canoe launch that is being installed this spring on the Waupaca River.

The launch is also going to be handicap accessible.

It is being installed by Memorial Day weekend.

The current access point to the Waupaca River is off Old Mill Street by the dam.

It is not handicap accessible.

The trail is being constructed from the parking lot at Petersen Park to the launch.

The hope is to also have the trail completed by Memorial Day weekend.

The city budgeted $31,000 for the launch as part of this year’s capital projects budget.

Howard Quimby has donated $20,000 toward the cost of the trail.

The city is also seeking a Waupaca County Greenways Commission Grant.

City Administrator Jeremy Schroeder was to make a presentation to the commission last week.

In addition, the city has the opportunity to buy the red barn on the property, raze it and and create more parking.

The cost to purchase the building is $25,000, and the estimated cost of razing it and then constructing more parking there is $40,000.

This means the total cost of the kayak/canoe and trail project is about $136,000.
