Whopper Weekend set for May 15

Fish, game club holding annual event

A second year of COVID-19 disruptions hasn’t stopped the New London Fish and Game Club from hosting its Whopper Weekend event.

Although the format may have had to change for the second year in a row, club members are still bracing for a long day of fun, raffles food and entertainment Saturday, May 15, at their clubhouse, located at N5433 Old Highway 45.

Club director and Whopper Weekend volunteer Roger Krueger said this is the second year in a row that COVID-19 rules prevented the club from having its annual three-day event at New London’s Riverside Park.

The event is the club’s largest fundraising event and supports local conservation programs and scholarships.

The club’s remedy to the COVID-restrictions is similar to last year.

In March, the club decided to hold the fishing contest only at Riverside Park, expanding it to five days while scheduling its larger crowd and celebration at their clubhouse grounds north of town to one day on May 15.

The event will include the traditional outdoorsman raffle drawing, buffalo burger feed and entertainment from 6 a.m. to midnight at the clubhouse.

Anglers entering the free fishing contest can still compete for bragging rights and prizes by registering fish at the east boat launch in the park.

“Afterwards, they can tuck the boats away and head out to our clubhouse for a hot meal, refreshments, entertainment and some social time,” Krueger said.

The open house-style event will feature live entertainment in the afternoon and evening and a grand prize raffle drawing at 9:30 p.m.

This year’s grand prize is a Browning MK3 .30-06 rifle. Thirty-two other top prizes featuring guns and sporting equipment will be awarded.
