Community Service Day

Iola-Scandinavia students pitch in

By Holly Neumann

For the first time since the fall of 2019, Iola-Scandinavia High School students worked on 12 different projects throughout the area as part of their annual Community Service Day.

“It felt great to be out in the community and making a difference,” adviser Tamela McCartney said.

“There were projects that hadn’t been done since the last time we did them. The results of the day really show what a difference our students can make.”

About 150 students participated.

The hope is that the students gain an appreciation for all of the different people it takes to make the community great, according to McCartney.

“Some are exposed to places they’ve never been,” she said. “Some are thrilled to help clean up a place that means something to them.”

The school’s National Honor Society chapter organizes a Community Service Day each spring and fall.

“These days, it’s important for our students because it offers them an opportunity to give back to a community that gives them so much,” McCartney said. “There are students who find this day to be productive compared to days spent in the classroom.”

The next Community Service Day will take place this fall.

Anyone who knows of a project can email McCartney at [email protected] or call the school at 715-445-2411 and leave a message.
