Waupaca to stage “Nuncrackers”

Community theater group holding auditions in June

The Waupaca Community Theatre is announcing auditions for its December 2021 production of Dan Goggin’s musical comedy “Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical.”

Auditions will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waupaca.

Those auditioning may arrive at any point during that time frame. They should have a brief song prepared to demonstrate their vocal abilities and expect to read lines.

While many of these characters were previously portrayed in “Nunsense,” casting for “Nuncrackers” will be distinct. All roles will be newly cast based on these auditions.

“Nuncrackers” is a holiday musical that revisits some of the characters from the original “Nunsense” show, which was performed by the group in the summer of 2016.

Audiences will recall characters such as Sister Mary Regina, the mother superior of the convent; Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices; Sister Robert Anne, who is waiting for her big break on Broadway; Sister Mary Paul, the nun formerly known as Amnesia; and Sister Mary Leo, who intends to be the first famous nun ballerina.

The sisters are joined by Father Virgil Manly Trott, the “real-life” brother of Sister Mary Leo, as well as four student talent show winners from Mount Saint Helen’s School.

This time around, the Little Sisters of Hoboken have taken it upon themselves to produce a Christmas special for Cable Access. The audience will enjoy the many acts that the sisters prepared for the event, including a sing-along, a Secret Santa activity with members of the audience, an appearance by the mischievous Sister Mary Annette, and many toe-tapping tunes. The group even performs their own interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Ballet”.

The comedy boasts a wide variety of musical numbers, such as Twelve Days Prior To Christmas, Santa Ain’t Comin’ To Our House, A Carnival Christmas, Jesus Was Born In Brooklyn, In The Convent, and It’s Better To Give.

“Nuncrackers” will be co-directed by Liz Kelley and Linda Trepasso. While this will be the first time directing for Kelley, Trepasso has directed and helped to produce numerous shows in the area, including the 2016 Waupaca Community Theatre production of “Nunsense.”

Performances will take place Dec. 9-12, at the historic Gerold Opera House in Weyauwega. Rehearsals will be held in Waupaca during the summer pending cast schedules and then continue mid-September up to the performances.

The Waupaca Community Theatre is a division of the Waupaca Fine Arts Festival.
