Suspect faces attempted arson charge

Woman in custody on $1,000 cash bond

Stacie L. Quimby, 36, Milwaukee, is charged with attempted arson.

On June 2, Waupaca County Judge Vicki Clussman ordered a $1,000 cash bond.

Conditions of the bond include that Quimby not go upon the premises of Norseman Motel in Iola and that she not possess any matches, lighters or lighter fluid.

Clussman also ordered Quimby to undergo a competency evaluation.

On May 31, Iola Police Chief Paul Zierler responded to an arson complaint at Norseman Motel.

The motel’s owner said a tenant, identified as Quimby, was to be evicted on June 1.

He said the building manager saw Quimby lighting a fire on the bed.

She then fled the room, and the manager removed the smouldering mattress and linens.

In addition to the smoke and damaged mattress, Zierler noted containers of oil, diesel fuel and charcoal lighter in the room.

According to the criminal complaint, Quimby told Zierler she started the fire because she hoped the guests would flee and people would find out about what was going on at the motel.

She reportedly said she first tried to start the fire with oil, and when that did not work, she used lighter fluid.

Police found trails of oil inside and outside Quimby’s room.

Quimby faces up to 20 years if convicted of attempted arson of a building.
