Tracy Hames will present “Wetlands as Solutions to Wisconsin Water Issues” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 7.

Hosted by Winchester Academy, this virtual program will be broadcast on WILW 96.3 FM or can be viewed on WIN-TV, Facebook Live or YouTube.

Questions to the speaker may be submitted via Facebook or phoned in to 715-942-9917 during the program.

Hames, executive director of Wisconsin Wetlands Association, will discuss what wetlands are, why they are important, the current state of wetlands in Wisconsin and how to care for these natural resources.

Historically viewed as wastelands, wetland loss was rampant in Wisconsin for many decades.

The legacy of wetland loss has contributed to many of the current natural resource and societal problems, such as increased flooding, decreased water quality and loss of fish and wildlife habitat.

Hames will present wetlands from a new perspective, showing how to use them as solutions to water-related issues, especially flooding.

Hames was employed for more than 20 years as a waterfowl biologist with the Yakama Nation Wildlife Resource Management Program in Washington state.

He received his bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental studies from Macalester College, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a master’s degree in natural resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Dick Hansen is the sponsor of this program.
