Polar Bears, T-Birds stay alive

Regional finals set for June 16

Two area teams advanced to the regional final round of the WIAA State Softball Tournament.

Hortonville handed Appleton West a 10-0 loss June 14 in Division 1, while Iola-Scandinavia outscored Sevastopol 19-10 in Division 4.

Both teams will play for a regional championship Wednesday, June 16. Hortonville will host Kimberly, while Iola-Scandinavia will head to Algoma.

Division 1

Hortonville 10, Appleton West 0

The second-seeded Polar Bears improved to 22-4 on the season by shutting out the seventh-seeded Terrors.

Division 2

Waupun 10, Waupaca 8

A late comeback came up short for the Comets, as Waupaca trailed 10-4 heading into the seventh inning.

Waupaca opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning, but Waupun answered with two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth to go up 6-1.

The Comets cut into the lead with a run in the fifth, but Waupun scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Waupaca cut into the lead again in the sixth with two runs before the Warriors scored their final run.

Waupaca had opened postseason play June 9 with a 10-0 win over Xavier.

Freedom 13, Clintonville 0

Top-seeded Freedom ended the season for Clintonville with a 13-0 win over the Truckers.

Clintonville, a No. 8 seed, had opened tournament play June 9 with a 6-1 win over Notre Dame Academy.

Shawano 3, New London 1

Shawano ended New London’s season by handing the Bulldogs a home loss.

The Hawks took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. New London answered with a run in the fifth, but Shawano added an insurance run in the sixth.

Maribel Glodowski had two of New London’s five hits.

Division 3

Wautoma 7, Weyauwega-Fremont 3

The second-seeded Hornets eliminated the seventh-seeded Warhawks.

Weyauwega-Fremont had advanced to the regional semifinal June 9 with an 11-0 six-inning win over Omro.

Division 4

Iola-Scandinavia 19, Sevastopol 10

The Thunderbirds and Pioneers combined for 29 runs.

Sevastopol took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning, but the T-Birds scored twice in each of the first two innings.

The Pioneers regained the lead with four runs in the fourth and Iola-Scandinavia responded with four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Sevastopol came up with its final three runs in the sixth and the T-Birds added to their lead with six runs in the bottom of the inning.
