Model train show at rec center

Event coincides with Waupaca Strawberry Fest

The Waupaca Area Model Railroaders will host a model train show during Waupaca’s Strawberry Fest.

Slated to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 19-20, the show will be held at the Waupaca Recreation Center, at the intersection of School, State and Badger streets.

Admission is free.

Operating model railroads will be on display, including the Waupaca Area Model Railroaders (WAMR) HO layout, which is 20 feet by 50-foot.

The WAMR layout demonstrates how familiar locations can be incorporated into a layout plan.

Each layout is unique, expressing the vision of its builders. Some layouts accurately recreate a slice of America’s railroad history. Other layouts are creations of their builders, with facetious railroads and locations.

Model railroaders will be on hand to share their knowledge of the hobby and explain the techniques used to create their model empires.

Vendors and swap tables will display the newest engine, caboose, scenery materials and detail parts for any layout Visitors may find missing pieces that might complete their layout or that piece of out-of-production rolling stock that is no longer readily available from the manufacturer.

Children can look for Clifford the Big Red Dog or the monkey in a tree. Pictures of trains and coloring materials will be provided at the show.

Food and refreshments will be available.

The club meets weekly on Thursday evenings at various members’ homes to assist them in building or operating their private railroad empires.

Train depot

The Waupaca Historical Society has restored the historic Waupaca SOO Line passenger station.

Located six blocks from downtown, the station will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

From the station agent’s chair, visitors may see a Canadian National train rumble past. Visitors can tour the train shed to see the Model T depot hack, and a baggage car from the old Waupaca Electric Railroad that was restored by the Waupaca Area Model Railroaders.

A G-Scale model railroad and other model railroad exhibits have been added in the recently expanded basement.
