Eugene L. “Butch” Sorenson, age 88, of Waupaca, WI, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Bethany Home in Waupaca.
He was born in Stevens Point, WI on January 4, 1933, a the son of the late Rhoda and Mary (Shomberg) Sorenson. He married Lois J. Merkatoris on August 30, 1958 in Green Bay, WI. She preceded him in death on March 1, 2010. Butch was a long time member of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca. He was a respected and well-liked high school biology teacher in Manawa, WI for many years as well as a winning coach of football and wrestling. After teaching he became the owner and manager of the Crystal River B & B Inn in Rural (Waupaca), WI where he ran the successful business with his wife Lois for several years. Upon retirement, Butch and Lois lived in Rural, WI and were active in the Rural Historical Society until their deaths.
Survivors include his children: Mark (Nancy) Sorenson, Neenah, WI; M.J. Sorenson, Waupaca, WI; Stephen (Dulcie) Sorenson, Cleveland, WI; Barb Metzig, Bentonville, AR; Sonja (Mike) Nellis, Waupaca, WI; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and special friend, Barb Millin, Waupaca, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife – Lois.
A Private Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church in Waupaca, with Father Xavier Santiago, officiating. Interment will be held Rural Cemetery, Town Dayton, Waupaca Co., at a later date. The Holly Funeral Home of Waupaca is assisting the family with arrangements.
