Organizers seek to remove Phair from Waupaca School Board

A petition is circulating to recall Waupaca School Board member Pat Phair.

Shelly Morzfeld, of Waupaca, filed notice of intent to circulate petitions on June 23.

Morzfeld said the recall “has to do with his behavior at the meeting.”

At the May 21 special school board meeting, Phair became angry while criticizing the board for not following the advice of the medical experts regarding making masks optional during summer school.

“If I was a member of the medical group who are monitoring all the information and a representative of the School District of Waupaca came in looking for information after what’s happened in this district, I would look very much at them and say – and you can all close your ears if you want – but go f*** yourself,” Phair said.

Morzfeld said petition organizers had “no other issues” in seeking a recall.

“They now have 60 days to obtain enough signatures to require a recall,” according to business manager assistant Carol Makuski.

Petitioners must gather at least 1,701 signatures – 25% of the number of district residents who voted in the last gubernatorial election for a recall.

“Once the petitions are filed, signatures will have to be reviewed and then both Mr. Phair and petitioner have some time before the board would set an election date for the recall should one become necessary,” Makuski said.

When asked to comment on the petition, Board President Stephen Johnson said. “Recall is a political effort and it’s not for the members of the board to make a comment.”
