Scruton, Mary M.

Mary M. Scruton, age 97 years, of Clintonville passed away Saturday, July 3, 2021 at ThedaCare Medical Center in Appleton.

Mary Margaret Martin was born on January 1, 1924 in the Town of Matteson, Waupaca County, Wisconsin to Chester and Julia (Jersey) Martin. Mary graduated from Clintonville High School in 1941. She was united in marriage to Leonard M. Scruton on July 2, 1941, with whom she shared her life for 72 years prior to Len’s death in 2013. For many years, Mary ran the lumberyard in Nichols where she resided for 50 years. She was very proud of the experience of calculating builders’ needs from the blueprints. With her ever-classic sense of style, Mary was often asked to assist the homeowners through the decoration process of their new home. Leaving the lumberyard did not mean retirement to Mary. She later worked at a dress shop in Clintonville which aided her stylist wardrobe. Attending Shriner and Masonic events with Len, fellow attendees often told Mary they could not wait to see what she would be wearing! Mary was a long-time member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Clintonville. She assisted with the running of the annual fall festival for years. An avid reader, Mary was a lifelong Friend of the Clintonville Library. She bought books for many folks including kids in town at the annual library book sales. A love of cats cannot justly define her relationship with her feline friends. Cats were drawn to her. They often appeared on her doorstep distressed and in need. None were turned away, even if it required frequent feedings with an eye dropper to restore their health. Tommy was her recent companion and will miss her ever attentive love. Mary took care of many others during her life. She sincerely touched everyone that she met. A resident of Aster Assisted Living the past six years, Mary was often asked to help residents become comfortable with their new home.

Survivors include one grandson, Jeff (special friend Roberta), granddaughter Robin (widow of grandson Rick); great-grandchildren: Mikayla, Julia, Jacob, Jeff Jr., and Luke, as well as several great-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by many other relatives and friends. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her devoted husband Leonard, son Richard, grandson Rick, her sister Ruth, and dear friend Joan Hansen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, July 8th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church, Clintonville. Fr. Timothy Shillcox, O. Praem will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of mass at the church. Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Clintonville, is assisting with the arrangements. Please go to www.beil-didier.com to sign the online guestbook or to send a card.

The family wishes to thank all the physicians, nurses, and hospice team at ThedaCare Medical Center for the compassionate care given to Mary and the family.
