New London Senior Center Manager Lori Schneider announced that Memory Cafes will be integrated into the senior activity offerings starting Monday, July 26.

They are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. the last Monday of each month.

A coordinator from the Fox Valley Memory Project asked Schneider to consider helping the dementia-stricken population with a monthly activity.

Schneider had attended a Memory Cafe at Mosquito Hill and decided to add another date and location to the New London area.

Memory Cafes provide an innovative form of social engagement for people living with dementia, cognitive decline or other forms of memory loss.

Living with dementia can be isolating, and Memory Cafes provide a safe place for dementia sufferers and their caretakers to get out and have socialization and a little fun and relaxation.

Each month the NLSC cafe will offer a craft or a demonstration, or there may be entertainment.

Time for visiting and sharing memories is another important element of the event, which will last an hour and a half.

Sun catchers will be the craft for the July 26 cafe. Those who attend should bring a few pieces that they want to incorporate into the craft. Other supplies will be provided.

The second cafe on Monday, Aug. 30, will feature the music of pianist Ellen Martinson.

There is no charge for the cafes.
