Legion teams heading to state

Waupaca, Clintonville advance

By Greg Seubert

State tournament appearances are nothing new for the Waupaca and Clintonville American Legion baseball teams.

The season will continue this weekend for both programs after Waupaca and Clintonville qualified for the Class AA and Class A state tournament, respectively, that get underway Friday, July 30.

Waupaca won the New London Regional and will compete with Antigo, River Falls, Medford, Beaver Dam, Ahnapee, Kaukauna and Onalaska in Antigo, while Clintonville placed second at the Clintonville Regional and will join Denmark, Marathon, St. Mary’s Springs, Altoona, Waupun, Viroqua and West Salem in Denmark.

Class AA

Waupaca is heading back to state for the second season in a row after competing in the Class A tournament in Westby two years ago.

Waupaca also made it to the Class AA tournament in 2004, 2005 and 2013.

Waupaca opened the regional July 23 with a 12-7 win over the host New London Clippers and followed that up the following day with a 7-4 win over Mosinee.

That win set up a second matchup with the Clippers on July 25 and Waupaca wrapped up the championship with a 6-3 win.

After falling to Waupaca in the opening round, the Clippers responded July 24 with an 11-1 win over Hortonville and a 4-1 win over Mosinee.

Hortonville ended up going 0-2 in the tournament after dropping a 4-3 decision to Mosinee July 23 and coming up short the next day against New London.

Class A

The Diamond Cats are heading back to state for the first time since 2017 after placing second behind Denmark.

Clintonville made it to state in Class A in 1988, 1989, 1995, 1996, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017 and in Class AAA in 1961, 1964 and 1968.

The Diamond Cats opened regional play July 21 with a 12-2 win over Wrightstown before handing Bonduel a 1-0 defeat the following day.

Clintonville stayed alive in the tournament July 23 with a 4-2 win over Denmark and eliminated Bonduel July 24 with a 15-5 win.

That win set up a rematch with Denmark, but the Diamond Cats ended up on the short end of an 11-4 score.

Denmark then wrapped up the regional championship July 25 with a 14-1 win over Clintonville.
