Warhawk Trails now open

Disc golf course set up in Weyauwega

There’s a new game in town in Weyauwega.

The Warhawk Trails Disc Golf Course opened its doors to the public for the first time Aug. 4, as more than 20 people attended an opening ceremony for the nine-hole course, located behind the school complex.

Bob Hall designed the course.

“Each hole has two tees,” he said. “The red tees are generally shorter holes, designed for instruction at the school. The white tees are for longer, more difficult holes.

“Wes Schroeder from the school has been really helpful throughout the whole design and installation process,” he said. “Also, Alex Goolsby and Caden Nettekoven from the Waupaca Disc Golf Club, played a critical role in carving out the fairways through some pretty densely wooded areas.”

The course is free to play and open to the public, just not during school hours.

“This course is going to be one of the – if not the – most beautiful courses in the county,” Hall said. “I can’t wait to see what this place looks like in the fall.”

The course has been registered with the Professional Disc Golf Association and has already obtained a 3.6 rating out of 5 on UDisc, a phone app for disc golfers.

Although the course is open, work will continue to improve fairways, provide rubber tee pads and school-themed tee signs. A wooden bridge is also planned over a small creek on one of the holes.

“With the covid bug still hanging around, people are looking for a safe, inexpensive family activity,” Hall said. “Disc golf meets all those needs.”
