Collapsed silo restored

Project completed at Jorgens Park

What started as a volunteer project 10 years ago to create an outdoor use space by renovating a small farmstead on the edge of Scandinavia continues to unfold.

Motorists on State Highway 49 just north of the village may notice a rebuilt silo at the east end of a barn at the Jorgens Park Preserve.

The barn was restored as an Eagle Scout project in 2018. The barn’s original silo had collapsed, but the wood staves were stored in the barn loft with the plan to rebuild it.

Carl Lantz, a retired builder in the area, researched the construction of wood stave silo and took the lead for the project, which was funded by money raised by the Run for the Silo in 2018.

With the addition of a few donated materials, Lantz was able to reconstruct the silo largely as it once stood.

The vision was to create a picturesque setting on the property of Gunnie and Dora Jorgens’ old farm site.

Photographers and families have used the barn as a backdrop for graduation, wedding and other photos.
