Historical marker unveiled in Iola

Sign recognizes one-room schools

The Iola Historical Society recently unveiled Historic Marker 19, which recognizes one-room rural schoolhouses from 1850 to 1960.

The marker stands in front of the one-room schoolhouse on the society’s campus at 205 Depot St., Iola.

The replica is patterned after the Townsend Schoolhouse, which was built in 1896 and still stands today south of Scandinavia. It is located at N4799 State Highway 49 and currently serves as the office of Westley Heating & Air Conditioning.

“A special thanks to Our Saviors Lutheran Church for providing funding for the marker and for Cliff Mishler for researching and writing the text for the sign,” Greg Loescher said.

He also recognized Lee and Sue Halverson, who have adopted the schoolhouse and made many improvements on the display inside.

The Iola Historical Society will be announcing new markers early in 2022. Anyone wishing to financially support the program can mail donations to Iola Historical Society, P.O. Box 412, Iola, WI 54945.
