Weyauwega-Fremont schools were closed Wednesday, Dec. 8, after several students found a threatening note in a high school classroom on Tuesday.

The note had images of a student with a handgun, according to District Administrator Phillip Tubbs.

In an emailed statement, Tubbs told the Waupaca County Post, “The note had threatening images non-specific to any person or school building. Administration has been working closely with local Law Enforcement to investigate this matter.”

Weyauwega police and the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office are working together on the situation.

The school district emailed two letters to parents on Tuesday.

In the first letter, Tubbs said, “Student and staff safety is our number one priority. After analyzing the threat, the district is planning on increasing our safety measures for tomorrow. Therefore, on Wednesday, December 8th we will have an increase of Police presence at the Weyauwega campus. Random backpack searches may occur as students enter the school building.”

Parents were given the choice to keep their children home.

In the second letter on Tuesday, Tubbs said, “The Weyauwega-Fremont School District will be closed tomorrow. No school for students or staff.

“Recently, we have had more concerns brought to our attention, we believe these new developments are not related to the earlier non-specific threat that was received today. However, like I pointed our in my earlier correspondence, we do not take these situations lightly and want to make sure that our school is safe,” the letter said.

School re-opened on Thursday, Dec. 9, with increased police presence.

Parents were given the choice of keeping their children home from school on Thursday.

“Local law enforcement worked overnight on the situation and was able to minimize the threat,” Tubbs said. “As a result of the investigation, law enforcement has a suspect in custody, pending charges.”
