Manawa girls win tournament

Wolves defeat ranked team

A pair of victories added up to a holiday tournament win for the Manawa girls’ basketball team.

The Wolves defeated North Fond du Lac and Oakfield to win the North Fond du Lac Hall of Fame tournament, held Dec. 28-29.

Manawa 54, North FDL 51

The Wolves wrapped up the tournament championship Dec. 29 with a win over the Orioles despite a cold day of shooting.

Manawa connected on only 17 of 52 shots and also missed 17 of 33 free throws.

The Wolves took a 17-16 lead into the locker room at halftime before outscoring the home team 37-35 over the final 18 minutes.

Marilyn Klatt and Lexi Hedtke led the Wolves with 13 and 12 points, respectively, while North Fond du Lac’s Bree Rock led all players with 23.

Manawa 75, Oakfield 74 (OT)

Manawa outscored Oakfield, which came into the game with a 7-0 record and was ranked 10th in Division 5, 10-9 in overtime Dec. 28.

The Wolves had a 27-26 halftime lead, but the teams headed into overtime tied at 65-65 after the Oaks had a 39-38 advantage in the second half.

Mikenna Wegener led four Manawa players in double figures with 18 points. Klatt, Hedtke and Olivia Santos chipped in with 15, 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Oakfield’s Stella Hofman led all scorers with 20 points.

Manawa improved to 6-5 on the season with the wins and hosted Lourdes Academy Jan. 3. The Wolves will head to White Lake Thursday, Jan. 6, for their first Central Wisconsin Conference-North matchup with the Lakers.
