Arrest follows heroin overdose

Waupaca County woman faces felony narcotics, child neglect charges

Miranda A. Barden, 31, Fremont, is charged with possession of narcotics, felony child neglect, two counts of felony bail jumping and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, Weyauwega Police Officer Brandon Rode was dispatched to the 100 block of West Main Street for a possible heroin overdose.

When he arrived, Rode heard a woman upstairs yelling for help. He found the woman administering CPR to Barden, who was on the floor next to a fold-out bed, unconscious and gasping for air. Her agonal breathing was a sign that she may have been near death.

There were two syringes on the bed.

Rode administered a nasal dose of Naloxone and rubbed Barden’s sternum. After about 90 seconds, Barden opened her eyes and sat up.

According to the criminal complaint, Barden accused the officers of dragging her out of bed.

Her sister explained she had pulled Barden to the floor in order to administer CPR.

She attempted to walk away and the officers held her down.

Barden initially denied overdosing, than said her boyfriend had died in her arms from an overdose earlier that morning and she was trying to numb the pain of losing him, the complaint says.

According to the complaint, Barden’s 4-month-old infant was present during both overdose incidents.

Barden is currently in custody on a $1,500 cash bond.

She also faces prior charges of felony marijuana possession and bail jumping.
