Comets’ comeback comes up short

Waupaca boys fall to Waupun

A fast start helped the Waupun boys’ basketball team pick up a nonconference win over Waupaca.

The Warriors connected on their first six shots to take an early 16-2 lead and held on for a 59-56 win over the Comets Jan. 8.

Waupaca also handed Oconto Falls a 75-46 North Eastern Conference loss Jan. 6.

Waupun 59, Waupaca 56

The Comets recovered from an early 14-point deficit and eventually cut Waupun’s lead to three points. The Warriors closed the first half with an 8-3 run and headed into the locker room at halftime with a 33-25 lead.

An 11-0 run in the second half helped the Comets turn a 35-25 deficit into a 36-35 lead.

Waupaca led by as many as four points before Jacob Krueger gave the Warriors the lead for good – 52-50 – with a three-pointer.

Alex Pankratz, Bryce Boldt and Paul Christian led Waupaca with 13 points each, while Waupun’s Jesse VandeKamp led all scorers with 14.

Waupaca 75, Oconto Falls 46

The Comets outscored the Panthers 35-21 in the second half and 40-25 in the second and improved to 3-3 in conference play.

Aaron Wolff led Waupaca with 17 points, while Luke Schwenn, Boldt and Bogard finished with 14 each. Isaac Raddatz led Oconto Falls with 15 points.

Waupaca played at Clintonville Jan. 11 and will host Little Chute at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14.
