Whale of a Tale talks classics

Three area libraries host virtual book discussions

Three Waupaca County libraries are teaming up for a virtual book group.

Sturm Memorial Library of Manawa, Scandinavia Public Library and Waupaca Area Public Library will host the Whale of Tale Book Group from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursdays from Feb. 24 to April 21.

As the name implies, the Whale of a Tale Book Group’s goal is to read books that are great in stature, measured in the number of pages and literary status.

Each novel will be broken into smaller sections to read and discuss weekly over the course of eight to 10 weeks, with new books selected on a semiannual basis.

Readers from all libraries in the Outagamie Waupaca Library System and beyond are welcome to join the group.

Three Musketeers

The book chosen for the inaugural discussion is “The Three Musketeers” by Alexandre Dumas.

Written in 1844 and set in 1625, “The Three Musketeers” recounts the adventures of Artagnan, who travels to Paris to join the heroic Musketeers of the Guard, fighting for chivalry and justice.

Full of adventure, intrigue, romance and humor, the book remains a stalwart classic in world literature and a favorite of readers all over the world.

Multiple editions of the book are available in Infosoup and electronic copies are available through several outlets. Those who register for the book group are also invited to the Whale of a Tale Facebook group, where links to the online discussions and supplemental information about the book and author will be available.

Meeting links will also be available a couple of days before each discussion on the libraries’ web pages. For those without virtual access, some arrangements to participate may be available from the individual libraries.

Anyone interested in joining the group can contact Sturm Memorial Library at 920-596-2252, Scandinavia Public Library at 715-467-4636 or Waupaca Area Public Library at 715-258-4414.

Information can also be found online at each of the library’s web pages.
