Charity Ride helps local family

New London teen rides for mom

The worst news any young man could ever receive is that his mother has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

This is exactly the news that 16-year-old Jordan Kuhnke of New London received six months ago. He has been praying for a magical cure for his mother, Dawn McConnell, ever since.

Although radiation and chemotherapy treatments commonly help, McConnell’s colon cancer is not improving. Kuhnke has been doing everything he can to help, including turning over his earnings from his job at Jolly Roger’s Pizza in New London, to cover expenses.

Looking for more ways to assist, he heard the Manawa Snodeo was offering a charity ride this year, which basically offered riders a way to make money for deserving groups or individuals.

He was excited about the opportunity and pre-registered as soon as the program was announced.

Originally, he planned to ride his 1989 Polaris Trail Indy until it developed major engine troubles on a snowmobile trip that sidelined the machine.

Kuhnke’s father, Bart Kuhnke, contacted Manawa Snodeo organizer Dave Sarna to explain what had happened, and that his son would have to pull out of the ride.

“If there is anything we have enough of is snowmobiles,” said Sarna, who offered one of his own Arctic Cats for Kuhnke to ride.

Participants in the Charity Ride took part on the slalom course during this year’s Snodeo.

Snodeo staff recorded the snowmobiles mileage, then the rider took to the course for as long as they are able without stopping. For every mile they record, Snodeo donated $1 to the rider’s charity of choice.

The Kuhnkes showed up early that day and Jordan looked forward to taking part in the ride. Forty-seven miles later, he pulled back in, earning a $47 donation for his mom.

“It was very touching for us to be able to help this young man in his effort to aid his mother’s expenses any way he can,” said Sarna, who personally matched the dollar amount. “Anyone interested in helping out can contact the Manawa Snodeo for information.”

Interested parties can also attend a benefit for McConnell which will be held from 1-5 p.m., Sunday, April 3, at Bean City Bar and Grill, New London.
