I-S girls fall in Auburndale

A regional championship was not in the cards this season for the Iola-Scandinavia and New London girls’ basketball teams.

Both teams saw their season end Feb. 26 with a loss to Auburndale and Mosinee, respectively, in WIAA regional finals.

Iola-Scandinavia fell to Auburndale 48-42 in a Division 4 final after opening tournament play the previous day with a 48-39 win over Stratford.

New London’s season ended with a 54-30 loss to Mosinee. The Bulldogs advanced to the Division 2 final with a 54-39 win Feb. 25 over Shawano.

Auburndale 48, I-S 42

The third-seeded Thunderbirds fell to the second-seeded Eagles on the Eagles’ home court.

Auburndale led by as many as 10 points in the first half before the T-Birds cut the deficit to 23-18 at halftime.

Lillian Fuhs gave Iola-Scandinavia a 25-24 lead 4 1/2 minutes into the second half, but Auburndale answered on its next possession and the Eagles never trailed again.

The T-Birds cut the lead to 34-33 with 8 1/2 minutes remaining in the game, but Auburndale answered with an 8-0 run.

Fuhs and Jaelyn Sivertson combined to score 40 of the T-Birds’ 42 points with 21 and 19, respectively, while Annamarie Aue led Auburndale with 18.

I-S 48, Stratford 39

The T-Birds outscored the Tigers 21-20 in the first half behind 12 points from Sivertson and had a 27-19 advantage in the second half.

Sivertson led all scorers with 17 points and Madeline Much also finished in double figures for the T-Birds with 13. Lauren Krause led Stratford with 12 points.

Mosinee 54, New London 30

The fourth-seeded Bulldogs trailed the top-seeded Indians 30-16 at halftime and couldn’t come back in the second half.

Kenna Mix led New London with 10 points and Kate Fitzgerald led Mosinee with 22.

New London 51, Shawano 34

The Bulldogs opened the tournament at home by beating the Hawks for the third time this season.

New London led 25-19 at halftime and outscored Shawano 26-15 in the second half.

Mix led the Bulldogs with 15 points.
