Council may move meeting dates

New London Common Council discusses shifting monthly meetings

By Robert Cloud

The New London Common Council held a first reading of an ordinance amendment that would reschedule council meetings from the second to third Tuesday of the month.

The Finance and Personnel Committee recommended changing its meeting dates so the city attorney could attend.

In December 2019, the council voted to amend its municipal code so that the city attorney would be appointed by the mayor rather than elected.

The change was made in response to longtime City Attorney Earl Luaders announcing his plan to retire at the end of his term in April 2020.

In May 2021, the council approved a contract with Wolf River Lawyers, where Luaders formerly worked.

Keith Steckbauer later became New London’s city attorney.

Because Steckbauer also serves other communities and has a meeting on the second Tuesday of the month, the Finance and Personnel Committee recommended rescheduling New London’s regular monthly meetings.

Council will vote on the amendment at a future meeting.
