Vacant seat on city council

New London’s District 2 needs another alderperson

By Robert Cloud

Normally, each aldermanic district in New London has two representatives, who are elected in rotating years.

Zaug was last elected in 2020 and his term expired in 2022.

Billie Olson was elected in April 2021 and her term was set to expire in 2023.

However, Olson vacated her seat in October 2021 after she moved out of the city.

Council members appointed Hass on Nov. 9, 2021, to fill Olson’s seat.

In addition to running for the remaining year of Olson’s unfinished term in office, Hass also filed to have his name on the ballot for the full two-year term that Zaug was seeking.

Hass won both elections.

In the contested race for the full two-year term, Hass received 142 votes and Zaug garnered 87.

Hass received 198 votes for the uncontested one-year term on city council.
