Drug bust in Waupaca

Police seize methamphetamine

Officers raided a home on the 800 block of Ware Street in Waupaca on April 13 and reported finding small amounts of meth in various location in the house.

According to the criminal complaint, this is not the first time police have executed a search warrant at the address.

Waupaca Police Officer Tom Grant reported, “It should be noted this residence has been the focus of various drug-related investigations and numerous individuals with outstanding warrants have been arrested here since I started working for the City of Waupaca Police Department in April of 2017.”

Several suspects were charged following the April 13 search.

Carlitos M. Tello, 23, was charged with possession of methamphetamine as party to a crime, maintaining a drug trafficking place and two counts of felony bail jumping.

Danielle M. Schmidt, 26, was charged with possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a drug trafficking place.

Mark T. Gardner, 55, was charged with maintaining a drug trafficking place, possession of drug paraphernalia and misdemeanor bail jumping.

Jason C. Morey, 41, was charged with maintaining a drug trafficking place, two counts of felony bail jumping and possession of drug paraphernalia.

When officers entered the house, they found Tello and Schmidt in a bedroom behind a locked door.

Grant forced open the door and told them to go to the living room.

Police seize evidence

Inside the bedroom, Grant found knives and cans of butane on the floor.

Butane torches are commonly used to smoke meth.

Police also reported finding small, residual amounts of suspected meth in a plastic container and a plastic bag.

Officers found a small plastic bag with suspected meth residue in the bathroom.

Schmidt told Grant that Tello brought the meth home the previous night and she had smoked it all prior to the police arriving, the complaint says.

Schmidt also reportedly said she was 10 weeks pregnant with Tello’s child.

Court records

At the time, Tello was on two felony bonds that included the condition that he inform the court if he moved to a new address.

On April 11, the post office returned a court notice for a hearing because Tello no longer lived at his last known address on Waupaca Street.

On Dec. 28, 2020, Tello was charged with possession of meth and misdemeanor bail jumping. He was released from custody on a $2,000 signature bond.

On Sept. 13, 2021, Tello was charged with possession of meth, felony and misdemeanor bail jumping and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released from custody 2 1/2 months later after posting a $2,000 cash bond.

Tello is currently in custody on a $5,000 cash bond.

Schmidt was released on a $2,000 signature bond.

Gardner remains in custody on a $1,000 cash bond.

Morey is in custody on a $500 cash bond.
