Henry Veleker was elected to the Waupaca Common Council with just 20 votes.

He will represent the 5th District.

Veleker ran as an unregistered write-in candidate for the 5th District seat.

Steve Hackett, who stepped down in 2021 after serving nine terms on the council, also ran as an unregistered write-in candidate this year.

According to Deputy Clerk Barb Nowak, after the votes were tallied on election night, Veleker and Hackett were tied at 20 votes each. Veleker’s name was drawn from a bowl to determine the election’s outcome.

He was sworn into office at the council’s organizational meeting on Tuesday, April 19.

Veleker served Waupaca as city administrator from 1998 until he retired in 2019.
