New London softball team advances to sectional

After rolling through the Bay Conference with a 12-0 record, the New London softball team can add a regional championship to its list of accomplishments.

The Bulldogs opened WIAA state tournament play with a pair of home wins, including a 9-1 victory May 26 over Mosinee in a Division 2 regional final. New London had opened tournament play May 24 with a 14-0 win over Colby/Abbotsford.

The top-seeded Bulldogs improved to 21-4 with the wins. New London will host No. 2 Medford at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in a sectional semifinal and the winner of that game will face Ellsworth or Altoona at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 2, in a sectional final in Mosinee.

New London 9, Mosinee 1

New London took a 7-0 lead into the sixth inning after scoring four runs in the second frame and single runs in the third, fourth and fifth.

Mosinee came up with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Emma Reismann, Autumn Winkelman and Kenna Mix each had three of New London’s 14 hits. Reismann drove in a team-high three runs.

Mix picked up the win on the mound and held the Indians to five hits while striking out six batters.

Maria Valls Raya and Amber Gonzalez had two hits for Mosinee.

New London 14, Colby/ Abbotsford 0 (5 inn.)

New London scored all the runs it needed in the first inning, as the Bulldogs scored six times in a five-inning win.

The Bulldogs added to their lead with five more runs in the third and three in the fourth.

Brooklyn Fuerst led the team with three hits, while Reismann, Mix,

Molly Kable and Sommer Krull added two each. Reismann and Fuerst drove in three runs and Reismann hit a home run.

Mix worked three innings on the mound to get the win and Kendall Heise pitched two innings to pick up the save.
