Week of creative activities for families

The Waupaca Community Arts Hub will host a free three-day Kids’ Art Camp and four special interactive family art events during ARTicipation Week, Aug. 14-20.

Arts Hub is a program of the Waupaca Community Arts Board,

“We’re thrilled that our Arts Hub staff can now bring so many wonderful events to WCAB’s annual ARTicipation Week,” said Marci Reynolds, WCAB President.

WCAB’s ARTicipation Week will offer daily live events and activities, culminating Downtown with the Friday Night Street Dance, Aug. 19, and the all-day Arts on the Square Festival, Aug. 20.

Detailed schedules and information can be found on WCAB’s website at www.waupacaarts.org/.

Kids’ Art Camp

Taught by professional artists, the free, multi-day Kids’ Art Camp will challenge participants to see the art hidden around them.

Using everyday materials, found objects and a keen eye, youth will create art that is intended to be hunted for, discovered and interacted with by community members during Arts on the Square and beyond.

The three-day Kids’ Art Camp is for children ages 10-14, and will run noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Aug. 17-19, at the Waupaca Area Public Library, 107 S. Main St.

The camp requires pre-registration and has a limit of 14 children.

To register, go to the WCAB website.

Community Street Piano

From 1-3 p.m., Monday, Aug. 15, in the City Square Bandstand teens from the Waupaca Area Public Library and kids from the Arts Hub will help community members design and paint Waupaca’s first community street piano. The goal is to create a new colorful piece of playable public art for the Waupaca community.

Co-sponsored by the Arts Hub and Library, the piano will stay in the City Square Bandstand during the summer and fall months. Everyone is encouraged to come tickle the ivories all summer.

Heart and Soul Piano Event

From 5:30-6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17, join students of the Arts in the City Square Bandstand to play duets of the classic song, “Heart and Soul.” Everyone is invited to participate.

Afterwards, children are invited to do an art activity in the Waupaca Library Exhibit Room as part of the grand opening of the Arts Hub Inaugural Student Art Show.

Kids’ Chalking Downtown

From 4-5 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18 in City Square, children can join Oshkosh artist,Mike Gelhar,to create chalk drawings on the sidewalks of City Square.

Gelhar will start creating his own chalk drawing that morning. The public is invited to stop by and watch him work.

Gelhar has participated in the Oshkosh Chalkwalk for the past five years. His work is displayed on his Instagram.

Kids’ Public Art Hunt

During Arts on the Square, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, families can search for public art pieces created by the students of the ARTicipation Week Kids’ Art Camp. The pieces are meant to be discovered, so will not be in plain sight.

For additional help, a Kids’ Public Art Scavenger Hunt tip sheet can be picked up in the Arts on the Square Workshop Tent behind the library.

To see the full schedule of ARTicipation Week events, the Friday Night Street Dance, and Arts on the Square, go to WCAB’s website at www.waupacaarts.org/
