Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, the Scandinavia Fire Department received a call about a break in a gas service line.

“A construction crew way laying asphalt and during their operations a gas service was disrupted and we had a gas leak on Main Street,” said Scandinavia Fire Chief Bryan Fuhs.

Approximately 30 residents and businesses were evacuated.

“We monitored down wind of the location and maintained a safe area, with staging in Scandinavia Park,” Fuhs said. “We made accommodations to get the elderly and others to get out of the sun.”

Fuhs went on to thank Silver Lake Lanes for use of their facilities to residents exposed to the extreme temperatures.

There were no injuries reported.

The leak was contained in approximately two hours.

“The area is all clear,” said Fuhs. “There is no hazard at this time.”

Iola Rural Fire Department and Ambulance service assisted with the call, along with the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office and Alliant.
