Warhawks not dwelling on past

Weyauwega-Fremont football team has new coach

Colton Zimmerman’s main message to the Weyauwega-Fremont football team is loud and clear.

“I put a sign up today that says, ‘The past is forgotten, you can do nothing about it,’” said Zimmerman, the Warhawks’ new coach who played his high school football at Iola-Scandinavia High School.

Weyauwega-Fremont had to wait until the final game last season to pick up its only victory, a 21-14 win over Manawa.

Zimmerman believes his game can improve on that 1-8 record if things fall into place.

“Every kid wants to win more than one game,” he said. “If they meet the standards that we’re giving them, they will. The kids are buying in. They know I demand great effort and accountability. I don’t care if you’re a freshman or a senior. Right now, it’s who wants to play and who wants to win.”

If the Warhawks are going to add to their win total, it’ll be in the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large, an eight-team conference that also includes Amherst, Manawa, Nekoosa, Shiocton, Spencer/Columbus Catholic, Stratford and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Amherst, Stratford, Shiocton and Spencer/Columbus Catholic have either won or played for a state championship in recent years.

“You look across the board and I’m willing to argue that there are probably the most state championships in this conference in all divisions,” Zimmerman said. “You can’t count any of these teams out and that’s what we love about it so much. We’d rather be tested than walk through an easy conference.”

The Warhawks will open the season Thursday, Aug. 18, in Stevens Point against Pacelli and the CWC-Large opener is set for Friday, Sept. 2, at home against Nekoosa.

“I’m not looking at metrics of score at the moment,” Zimmerman said. “I’m looking at the metrics of great effort and controlling our controllables, like going out on the field, knowing our job and doing it correctly. If we get some adversity, we’re not running from it. We’re punching back. We’re the Warhawks. That’s what we want to do.”
