Once a Squire …

Patrick Wood

Dear Reader,

Every year the first weekend in August, Abbot Pennings High School, which was merged into Notre Dame de la baie Academy, holds a golf reunion for all classes who attended/graduated from that school. Pete Kirschling has led the charge over the years for our class and initiated an annual informal gathering at Nicky’s Lionhead Restaurant in De Pere the day before teeing off. Traditions like this, built around an institution that developed a mammoth school spirit rivaling any other school in the state, die hard – if they ever die at all.

Last Friday at Nicky’s a group of Squires gathered and caught up with the present while reliving a number of cherished memories from the past. Having a camaraderie like this that transcends decades and death is a gift. Back in the day we always said to each other “Once a Squire, always a Squire!” Last Friday night’s convergence once again proved this to be true.
