There’s plenty of football to be played yet, but Weyauwega-Fremont has emerged as one of the surprises out of the Central Wisconsin Conference-Large.

The Warhawks opened CWC-Large play Sept. 2 with a 41-12 win over Nekoosa and also improved to 3-0.

Cashten Hoffman gave the Warhawks a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter with a 30-yard run.

Weyauwega-Fremont added to its lead in the second quarter on Brayden Arndt’s 50-yard run and Kameron Zielke’s 1-yard quarterback keeper.

Jonathan Wenzel’s 1-yard run with a minute to go in the first half cut the Warhawks’ lead to 21-6, but Weyauwega-Fremont struck again on its next drive with Zielke’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Arndt.

The Warhawks added touchdowns in the third quarter on Zielke’s 6-yard run and his 23-yard pass to Nicholas Huebner before the Papermakers closed the scoring later in the quarter on Nash Krcmar’s 50-yard pass to Francisco Vega.

Hoffman led the Warhawks in rushing with 136 yards on 10 carries, while Arndt added 79. Zielke also completed seven of nine passes for 152 yards. Arndt caught a team-high for passes for 81 yards.

Wenzel accounted for 159 of Nekoosa’s 186 rushing yards. Krcmar completed 10 of 24 passes, including two to Vega for 56 yards.

The Warhawks will head to Spencer Friday, Sept. 9, for a CWC-Large matchup with Spencer/Columbus Catholic. Warhawks make noise in CWC-Large
