Dannis Schouten, of Waupaca, age 74, passed away on September 11, 2022 at home with his family.
He was born in Waupun on May 2, 1948 to the late Andy and Vivian (Hennessey) Schouten. On January 6, 1973 he married Kathy Treder. Dan was a veteran, serving in the Army from 1967 until 1969. During that time, he was an Electronics/Missile Instructor at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. He graduated from UW Oshkosh with a BS in Economics and a MA in Econometrics. He taught Economics and Math at NWTC in Green Bay, and drove school bus for Waupaca School District for nearly 30 years. He was a Cub Scout, Webelo Leader and Boy Scout Leader for Troop 634 in Waupaca. He was also a leader of the Order of the Arrow. He developed a lifelong interest in Native American Culture and has an extensive collective of Native American books and artwork.
Dan was a self-taught woodworker and furniture maker and spent over 30 years making and restoring furniture. He loved spending time with family at the log cabin up north that he restored. Family was the most important to him, traveling across the country with his wife and granddaughters brought him much happiness. He also enjoyed reading, model trains, camping, lunches with his cousins, desserts and Christmas.
He will be sadly missed by his wife: Kathy of nearly 50 years; daughter: Sara (Christopher) Sandler; son: Andy (Amy) Schouten; granddaughters: Morgan, Lauren and Syndney Sandler and Sofia Schouten; nephews: Carl (Beverly) Matuszeski, Michael (Christy) Matuszeski, Thomas (Beth) Matuszeski; nieces: Pamela Tran, Vivian Schouten, Terri (Mark) Farren; sisters-in-law: Norma Schouten, Kelly (Dale) Bechard, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Andy Schouten, sister, Nancy Matuszeski, mother-in-law, Lois Treder, brothers-in-law, Carl Matuszeski and Scott Treder.
At his request there will not be a funeral, but the family will host a Celebration of Life for family and friends at the family home on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
The family would like to thank the Compassus nurses and staff who assisted with hospice care so Dan could be at home.
