Threat investigated in Manawa

Police increase patrols of schools

By Holly Neumann

Dr. El Manssouri, Little Wolf High School/Middle School principal, requested that law enforcement investigate a credible threat of school violence on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Both Manawa police and Waupaca County deputies responded.

The threat was discovered after a student posted a threatening comment on social media.

The threat came to the attention of staff at the New London School District, who called the high school/middle school and reported it.

In a letter to parents, Manawa School District Administrator Melanie Oppor noted, “Manawa Middle School and Little Wolf High school students and staff were asked to remain in their first hour class until about 9:30 a.m. This provided valuable time to conduct a thorough investigation and maintain appropriate confidentiality.”

“The juvenile was identified and the school has placed them on leave,” said Manawa Police Chief Jason Severson. “Charges will be sent to Waupaca County Juvenile Intake.”

Severson said Friday that there will be regular patrols in the morning, during school and at the end of the day.

“We are also looking into support from the public to bring back our school resource officer (SRO) program,” Severson said. “This would place an officer in the schools and equip them to handle multiple tasks to include student/staff safety.”

The incident remains under investigation, however “parents and students should feel assured that no one was nor is in imminent danger.”
