After three tries, the Waupaca boys’ basketball team has its first North Eastern Conference win.

The Comets overcame a five-point halftime deficit and handed Marinette a 68-56 loss Dec. 8 at Waupaca High School.

Marinette outscored Waupaca 30-35 in the first half, but the Comets had a 43-26 advantage over the final 18 minutes.

Waupaca opened the second half with an 8-0 run. Henry Mouw gave the Comets their first lead with a three-pointer during the run and Waupaca eventually built a 17-point lead.

The Marines cut the deficit to nine points with just under two minutes to go, but never got any closer.

Mouw led Waupaca with 19 points, while Aaron Wolff added 15 and Austin Adamczak finished with 12.

Marinette’s Samuel Sommerfeldt led all players with 20 points.

Waupaca will host Oconto Falls at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16.
