Mortensen, William

William Kenneth Mortensen, 80, of Iola passed away peacefully at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King on February 7, 2023.

He was born March 11, 1942 to Albert and Mauritta (Mork) Mortensen. In his younger years he attended school in Marion WI but transferred his senior year to Iola High School, where he graduated in 1960. On Sept. 25, 1970 he was united in marriage to Susan (Rondeau) Holland, they later divorced.

William served his country in the US Army in the First Calvary air mobile division. He received many awards including the Bronze Star medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Air Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, two overseas service bars, the Gallantry Cross Bronze Star by the Republic of Vietnam, the sharpshooter rifle award and many others.
He worked as a milk hauler for many years and then at the Waupaca Foundry as a bull ladle operator until his health prevented him from continuing working.

William loved to hunt and fish and was always a jokester. He loved to make people happy and to see them smile. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and he would do anything for them.

He will be deeply missed by his son Ken (Tamara) Mortensen, his grandchildren Michael Mortensen, Megan (Neil) Oligney, and Matthew Mortensen. Sons Ben (Jolene) Timdal and Sam Timdal. Siblings Dave (Goldie) Mortensen, Dale Mortensen, Ruby (Norm) Ehrenberg, Barb Mumbrue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother in law Chuck Mumbrue and other relatives and friends.

Private graveside services with military honors will be held at the Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a future date. Holly Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
