Wrestlers win conference titles

Botting, Hoffman, Skebba place first

Three area wrestlers returned from their respective conference tournaments Feb. 4 with an individual championship.

Manawa’s Cash Botting and Weyauwega-Fremont’s Vanden Hoffman won the 120- and 285-pound titles, respectively, at the Central Wisconsin Conference meet in Shiocton.

Meanwhile, Hortonville’s Wyatt Skebba won the 113-pound championship at the Fox Valley Association meet in Neenah.

CWC meet

Weyauwega-Fremont and Manawa placed fourth and seventh, respectively, at the 10-team meet.

Shiocton wrapped up the overall team championship with 273.5 points, followed by Wittenberg-Birnamwood (203), Bonduel (174), Weyauwega-Fremont 164, Amherst (100), Pittsville (98), Manawa (54.5), Menominee Indian (44), Rosholt (32) and Tri-County (31).

Botting, a freshman, won his championship with a 15-1 major decision over Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Easton Davis and improved to 37-4 on the season.

Three other Manawa wrestlers also placed at the tournament.

Hoffman pinned Brandon Bierman in 1:14 in the 285-pound first-place match, while Brent Pynenberg (160) and Brady Zemple finished sixth (195).

Hoffman was one of four Warhawks to wrestle for a championship and improved his season mark to 38-2.

Riley Scherg (106), Aiden Marquette (152) and Tellyer Alix (195) also made it to the championship round for the Warhawks.

Scherg dropped a 2-0 decision to Bonduel’s Jaxon Bogacz, Shiocton’s Colten Schuh pinned Marquette in 1:36 and Shiocton’s Ilijah Sanchez pinned Alix in 5:27.

Parker Scherg (113), Isiah Schuh (132), Alex Loehrke (145), Caden Meisenhelder (160) and Caleb Abbey (170) placed fourth for the Warhawks; Jared Bohringer (182) and Jesse Steinbach (220) placed fifth; and foreign exchange student Javier Monzon, a newcomer to the sport of wrestling, stepped in at 138 and placed sixth.

Weyauwega-Fremont will host a WIAA Division 3 regional Saturday, Feb. 11. Twelve other teams will also compete: Almond-Bancroft/Pacelli, Kewaunee, Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian, Manawa, Manitowoc Lutheran, Mishicot, New Holstein, Reedsville, Rosholt, Shiocton, Tri-County and Valders. Matches will start at 10 a.m.

FVA meet

Skebba was one of four Hortonville wrestlers that wrestled for a championship and helped the Polar Bears place second as a team behind Kaukauna.

Kaukauna won the meet with 280.5 points, followed by Hortonville (185), Neenah (183), Kimberly (159), Appleton North (153), Oshkosh West (111.5), Appleton West (40), Oshkosh North (38), Appleton East (25) and Fond du Lac (10).

Skebba pinned Neenah’s Eli Armatti in 1:55 to win his championship at 113 pounds, while Henry Niebauer dropped an 18-3 technical fall to Kaukauna’s Greyson Clark at 138, Kaukauna’s Connor Smith pinned Grant Harris in 1:54 at 145 and Kaukauna’s Drew Wendzicki pinned Nolan Smith in 42 seconds at 182.

Hortonville’s other placers included Tristan Ellerman (120), Griffin Jens (132), Aiden Roh (195) and Ben Smith (220), third; Kaden Brazeau (106) and Tage Wasmund (152), fourth; Ayden Needham (160), fifth; and Austin McHugh (170), sixth.

The Polar Bears will join Appleton East, Appleton North, Appleton West, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Menasha and Neenah for a Division 1 regional Feb. 11 at Kaukauna High School First-round matches will start at 10 a.m.
