Two more wins.

That’s what stands between the New London girls’ basketball team and the Bulldogs’ first trip to state since 2013.

New London won a WIAA Division 2 regional championship Feb. 24 with a 61-42 win over Mosinee one day after opening tournament play with a 62-49 win over Rhinelander.

The top-seeded Bulldogs will now face No. 2 Lakeland at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 2, in Antigo, in a sectional semifinal with the winner to meet No. 1 Menominee or No. 7 Tomah at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, in Medford for a sectional championship.

New London outscored the Indians 36-16 in the first half and used balanced scoring to seal the win.

Lizzie Steingraber and Jensen Mix led the Bulldogs with 12 points each and Shelby Glodowski chipped in with 10.

Taelyn Jirschele led Mosinee with 15 points.

New London took a 29-25 lead into the locker room at halftime and led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but a pair of three-pointer from Rhinelander’s Leah Jamison cut the lead to 48-45 with just under seven minutes to play.

That’s as close as the Hodags would get, however, as New London scored the next 10 points.

Rhinelander held Steingraber, New London’s leading scorer, to six points in the first half, but she ended up leading all players with 20 points. Glodowski and Kenna Mix also scored in double figures with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

Ava Lamers led Rhinelander with 15 points.
