Flanagan, Thomas John

How does one sum up the life of a great man in a few words? It seems impossible, yet we try.

Thomas John Flanagan passed into eternity on Thursday, March 2, 2023. We know for sure the first person he met up inside heaven’s gate was his wife, Vera, and then his brother, Garrett, who preceded him in death when Tom was just 16 years old. He was greatly looking forward to seeing them both again, and that gives those left behind some comfort. Tom loved and adored his wife of 58 years. Tom married his high school sweetheart, Vera Mary Konrad, on June 28, 1950. She passed away May 2, 2008. They were a perfect complement for each other, a wonderful demonstration of how a healthy, loving, Christian marriage should look. They made it look easy. Tom led by example, teaching his children how to be great friends to each other and loving parents to their children.

Tom was born on November 3, 1929, in Maple Creek, WI, the second child of John and Alice (Carey) Flanagan. His first priority was God. Second was family. Countless hours of his life were spent praying for his family that continued to grow with each passing year. Tom is leaving a legacy of love: six children, 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Surviving Tom are his six children, Michael (Lori) Flanagan, David (Becky) Flanagan, Patti (Mike deceased) Petit, Mary (Kevin deceased) Fenske, Tom (Jane) Flanagan, Margaret (Dale) Ziesmer; grandchildren, Grace, Shawn and Garrett, Kelsey, Jeremy, Shanda, Sara and Kyle, Jason, Aric and Christopher, Addie, Shannon, Emily and Ryan, and the families of his grandchildren. He is further survived by sisters-in-law, Lucille Konrad and Lillian Konrad and brother-in-law, John Peeters.

Greeting Tom at heaven’s gate are his parents; brother, Garrett; mother- and father-in-law, Loretta and Roy Konrad; sister-in-law, Norma Peeters; brothers-in-law, Leon, Kenneth and David Konrad; sister-in-law, Dorothy Peeters; and daughter-in-law and granddaughter, Mary and Angie Flanagan, along with other relatives and friends.

Dad, you left us beautiful memories. Your love will always be our guide. May your legacy live on in the way we live our lives, and may God bless our father (Tom) for being such an integral part of who we are today. We will miss you like crazy, but we will honor and celebrate your life the remainder of ours. Tom’s children would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Marge Krautkramer and Jane Rohan for their encouragement and support given over the years. Your friendship has been cherished beyond words.

The family also thanks Moment’s Hospice, especially Mikki and Nicki, for their compassionate care of our father. We thank the staff at St. Joseph Residence. We wish to thank all of our father’s neighbors and friends for their support and concern during his time at Marion Heights. Finally, we thank Fr. John Kleinschmidt for his visits with Tom and support of our family.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Tom will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in New London, with Fr. John Kleinschmidt officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
