Deputies report ‘suspicious’ deaths

Victims identified as Union Star Cheese Factory owners

The owners of the Union Star Cheese Factory near Fremont were found dead in their home in the town Wolf River.

Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies reported finding the bodies of David Metzig, 72, and Jan Metzig, 71, around 5:15 a.m. Saturday, March 18.

The deaths were considered suspicious, according to the sheriff’s office.

Two hours later, officers from the Fox Valley Metro Police Department and deputies from the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Heart of the Valley YMCA in the village of Kimberly, where a person of interest was taken into custody.

Authorities are not releasing the person of interest’s name pending charges.

The Metzigs ran the Union Star Cheese Factory since 1980. It has been in the family since 1911.
