T-Birds split softball games

The Iola-Scandinavia softball team split recent games with Winneconne and Weyauwega-Fremont.

The Thunderbirds dropped a 10-3 nonconference decision to the Wolves April 21 in Winneconne, but picked up an 18-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-East win April 18 over the Warhawks.

Winneconne 10, Iola-Scandinavia 3

Iola-Scandinavia held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning, but Winneconne exploded for eight runs.

Ava Printz led the T-Birds with two of the team’s six hits. Brooklyn Berrens and Clara Koles scored the first two runs with aggressive base running and Winneconne errors. Koles also drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Maddie Much went the distance in taking the loss. She allowed 11 hits and one walk while striking out five batters.

The defense committed two errors in the game.

Iola-Scandinavia 18, Weyauwega-Fremont 1 (5 inn.)

With a 2-0 lead, Iola-Scandinavia exploded for eight runs in the third inning and added eight more in the fifth,

Berrens and Marin Hoyord each had four hits for the T-Birds. Berrens had a leadoff home run in the third inning over the right-center field fence. She also had a double and drove in two runs.

Hoyord had two doubles and four RBIs; Koles had three hits while driving in three runs; and Printz had two hits and two RBIs.

Jayden McCoy, Lulu Fernandez and Brooklyn Buss had the Warhawks’ three hits, with Buss driving in the lone run.

Much pitched all five innings to earn the victory. She allowed three hits and one walk while striking out eight batters.

Olivia Witkowski started on the mound for the Warhawks and pitched the first three innings before McCoy pitched the final two innings. Witkowski allowed 10 hits and four walks and had three strikeouts, while McCoy allowed 10 hits and two walks and had two strikeouts.

Iola-Scandinavia will host Manawa Friday, April 28, before traveling to Keshena Monday, May 1, to face Menominee Indian. The T-Birds will also head to Wittenberg Thursday, May 4, for a CWC-East matchup with Wittenberg-Birnamwood. All games will start at 4:30 p.m.
