Chain O’ Lakes Floatilla planned

Adventure Outfitters will present the Chain O’ Lakes Kayak and Canoe Floatilla Saturday, June 3.

The event will raise funds for a dock and kayak launch at the Chain Exploration Center.

“The charter school (CEC) has access to Silver Lake,” said Mary Feldt, who is an organizer of the event. “They want to expand their curriculum with more outdoor education.”

Students will have the opportunity to study the lake, its water quality, plant and aquatic life and local wildlife.

Those participating in the event may bring kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards. They may also rent kayaks from Adventure Outfitters.

“Anything without a motor,” Feldt said.

It costs $15 per person to participate in the Chain Floatilla.

Paddlers will check-in at 7:30 a.m. at Adventure Outfitters Lakeside, N2757 County Trunk QQ on Taylor Lake, next to Clearwater Harbor. The float starts at 8:30 a.m.

During registration CEC students will give short presentations about the Chain O’ Lakes.

Feldt noted the educational benefits of the students’ presentations.

“They have done the research for their presentations and are learning about public speaking,” Feldt said.

Checkpoints

Students will also distribute lanyards with laminated maps of the route that indicate where the six checkpoints are located.

The Wisconsin Veterans Home, Onaway Island, Esther Williams Island, Government Island, Loyola Point and Otter Lake are the checkpoints.

When participants reach each checkpoint, they will be quizzed about the Chain. The answers can be learned from the students’ presentations.

For each correct answer, they will receive a raffle ticket. Plus, they will get a raffle ticket when they reach each checkpoint and a ticket for registering. That’s a total of 13 chances to win a raffle prize.

Winning tickets are good for gift baskets, boxes of cheese and produce, gift certificates and other items donated by local shops and restaurants.

All proceeds from the event, including registration fees and sponsorships, will be matched by the Hatherly Family Foundation.

Feldt said the floatilla is not a race, but a way for families to have fun together.
