Annual Pie in the Park returns

Event continues after cancellation in June

IOLA – The Sheveland-Taylor American Legion post’s annual “Pie in the Park” celebration will return to Veterans Memorial Park on Aug. 29, bringing together community members for an afternoon of local treats and patriotic pride.

The event from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. is free to attend. Attendees can purchase individual slices of pie, cupcakes and other baked goods, with the varieties and flavors left to the creative discretion of the community’s bakers. For the first time, visitors can also top their desserts with ice cream, a new partnership this year with Iola Mills.

The event is made possible through local businesses and volunteers that stepped up to support it. This year’s sponsors include The Village Hive, Trout Bum Bakery, Too-Dars Diner, Iola Mills, Amanda’s Cupcake of Appleton, and members and friends of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Vice commander Mike Richberg said the event serves as a social gathering and as an important fundraiser for the 97-year-old Sheveland-Taylor American Legion Post. Funds raised from the sales go directly to supporting local veterans and community initiatives.

According to Richberg, a portion of the proceeds will support the post’s monument fund, which pays for the annual engraving of deceased veterans’ names on the local memorials at Veterans Memorial Park. Funds are also allocated toward a building fund to secure a permanent physical home for the Legion post, and to support Camp American Legion near Lake Tomahawk, a free rest and recovery facility for veterans.

This year marks the fifth annual Pie in the Park event. Traditionally held the second weekend in June, the event was rescheduled for Aug. 29 after a longtime sponsor withdrew support at the last minute. To keep the tradition alive, Post Commander Dave Leder went door-to-door at local restaurants and bakers, securing new sponsors and the baked goods needed to hold the event.
