Joann “Jo” Bernd (nee Lively), age 90, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2024 in Waupaca, WI.
She was born in 1934 in Elmhurst, IL, to her parents Theodore Lively and Dorothy Lively.
Joann graduated from Madison West High School and furthered her education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was an active member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority. Her academic pursuits were only a part of her rich life, filled with passions and hobbies that reflected her caring nature. Joann married the love of her life James D. Bernd on August, 27, 1955 at the Pres House Madison, WI.
An avid animal lover, Joann dedicated much of her time to caring for and rescuing animals. Her home was a sanctuary for many, from orphaned robins to various dog breeds and beloved American Saddlebred, Valley Views Highland Heather. Joann’s equestrian interests were complemented by her love for the color blue (especially in the horse show ring). Joann had a very classic, elegant sense of style.
Joann also possessed a “mean” green thumb, admired by all who had the pleasure of seeing her plants and flowers. Her elegant style was not confined to her fashion sense but was evident in the beautiful surroundings she created both in her home and show horse stable.
Survivors include her loving husband James Bernd, Waupaca, WI; son David (Susan) Bernd, Social Circle, GA; daughter Sandra Bernd, Marquette, MI; grandchildren Katie (Randy) Norman, Social Circle, GA; Drew (Morgan) Bernd, Hoover, AL; great-grandchildren Harper Norman, Jack Norman and Finley Bernd.
A private family service will be held to honor Joann’s life. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Waupaca Humane Society of Waupaca County 2293 Commercial Dr. Waupaca, WI or the American Saddlebred Rescue group causes close to Joann’s heart.
