After several years, a longtime Central Wisconsin Conference boys’ basketball rivalry is still going strong.
Weyauwega-Fremont traveled to Amherst on Jan. 7 for a CWC-East matchup and returned home with a 65-52 win over the Falcons.
The Warhawks led by as many as 12 points in the first half before the Falcons closed the half with a 12-2 run that cut Weyauwega-Fremont’s lead to 24-22 at the break.
Although the Warhawks led the entire first half, the second half included eight lead changes.
Amherst took its first lead on its first possession of the second half on a three-pointer from Sully Perkins. The lead changed hands six more times before the Falcons took their final lead - 44-42 - on Jack Seeger’s basket. Kam Zielke later gave the Warhawks the lead for good, and the visitors outscored Amherst 21-10 the rest of the way.
Broc Billington scored 22 of his game-high 30 points in the second half to lead the Warhawks. Zielke and Chris Gunst also finished in double figures with 18 and 10 points, respectively, after the three players scored all 24 of their team’s points in the first half.
Perkins led the Falcons with 17 points, while Taylan McCormick and Seeger chipped in with 16 and 11, respectively.
The two teams will meet again Thursday, Feb. 13, in Weyauwega.
