WEYAUWEGA – Chief Thomas Cullen Jr. was named the Wisconsin State Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year by the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association.
The awards recognized Cullen’s almost 40 years of service and dedication to the safety and well-being of the Weyauwega community. His fire service career started in 1986 and came through the ranks as department representative, first captain, assistant chief, and in 2012 he became the fire chief of the department.
During his tenure as chief, he expanded training programs, modernized equipment, networked with other departments and participated in countless public outreach events. It’s not the first time he has been honored. He’s also won multiple Firefighter of the Year awards.
On the department’s Facebook page, Cullen remarked on receiving the award: “The community support for our fire department never fails to overwhelm me. This award is a testament to the firefighters, officers and command staff that I have the privilege of working with,” he wrote. “This award goes out to every firefighter who shows up with courage, every leader who leads with integrity and every department committed to saving lives and strengthening communities.”
