Cigar shop opens in King

Posted

WAUPACA – Wrapped, cut, lit and enjoyed, the Waupaca area welcomes a humidor and a space for cigar aficionados to unite and relax.
Buffalo Tobacco, on N2736 County Trunk QQ, is a unique kind of store led by the tobacco bartender himself, Niko Vincent, along with his mother, Nina Vincent, with help from his father, Tim, and sister, Athena.
The Vincent family moved from New Berlin to Waupaca shortly when Athena had decided to move to Fremont; Niko saw it as an oppurtunity to find a storefront to open a business.
Niko has worked in tobacco and cigars for the better part of ten years, working at Badger Tobacco in Milwaukee.
While there he learned the industry, the flavors, the science behind cigars and is able to help guide a cutomers’ flavor profile to the cigar that will best suit them.

So with his extensive experience in the tobacco industry, when the opportunity to move to the area arose he decided, along with Nina, that they would like to open a store, which is when they found their current location in King.
The store offers a wide range of cigars from places like South America, Nicaragua, and cigars with Cameroon wrappers, which is found in Africa.
Much of the tobacco is grown from Cuban seed to replicate that classic cigar taste, tobacco farmers that defected from Cuba took the seed to plant in similar climates, Niko said.
Brands like Drew Estate, Arturo Fuente, Oliva and Cohiba can be found within the store’s humidor, Niko said.
“When someone comes in and asks for a recommendation that is my favorite part of the job,” Niko said.
Niko said he applies a code of ethics to his work, not guiding someone towards the most expensive cigar, but instead guiding them to the cigar that he feels they will enjoy the most.
Not only does Buffalo Tobacco sell tobacco products, they also have souvenirs, shirts, pants featuring local businesses in Waupaca, lighters, smoking accessories and more.
Niko said the first week they were open was busy, with many customers saying they used to have to drive almost an hour to get the premium cigars they enjoy.
“It feels nice to open a business in a town that actually wants you there and is so welcoming,” Niko said. “It’s been a fun journey.”
The business is truly family run with the Vincent family, with Nina—whom Niko calls the backbone of the business—helps with day-to-day operations while Athena helps with social media and marketing.
The family-centered approach even extends to the store sign, which Athena designed and the entire family helped paint.
Niko said they are hoping to open a small lounge area outside for customers to sit and enjoy their cigar, and is also expanding and teaming up with local businesses in the future.
The hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
