NEW LONDON – The New London Common Council approved a brush disposal contract with DTAK that will cost the city of New London $12,500 for 2025.
The contract was unanimously approved by the New London Common Council at its March 18 meeting.
At the March 3 New London Public Works Committee meeting, Robert Garske, director of Public Works for the city of New London, told the committee that the proposed contract is the same as the contract the city had with DTAK the previous three years. The only change was the amount the city would have to pay, which was an increase of $500 from the previous year.
While Garske said he doesn’t like when costs increase, he stated this is the path the city is on until two things happen. First, the city would need to find room to contain the brush itself without having to move it multiple times. Second, the city would need to find a company to chip the brush the city accumulates.
The city accumulates quite a bit of brush, and with the limited staff the city has, Garske said it would be “next to impossible” for the city to chip the accumulated brush itself.
Garske said if the city could find room to store the brush, the city could possibly bring in a mobile grinder to grind up the brush.
“But, as of now, we’re kind of stuck in our small area,” Garske said.
