NEW LONDON – The New London Common Council has approved spending $20,199 to purchase a push camera set up for televising sanitary and storm facilities in the city.
The approval came at the council’s Sept. 16 meeting.
The purchase was first suggested in the Wastewater Notes that were presented to the Board of Public Works at its Aug. 4 meeting. In the Wastewater Notes it was stated that the city is spending a lot of money on sewer televising for construction projects. The city usually hires Speedy Clean or Great Lakes TV and Seal “to do preliminary documentation for engineering purposes and follow-up televising during construction to troubleshoot problems that occur once the hole is dug and does not match engineering plans.”
Due to the busy schedules of those two companies, they charge a lot for short notice work, and it can still take days for the company to perform the work, it was stated in the Wastewater Notes. A single call averages $1,800.
“Since 2023 we have spent over $15,000 in these types of calls,” it was stated. “With the upcoming projects on Mill, Beacon, South Pearl St., the wastewater treatment facility upgrade and Diggers Hotline locates, we have determined it will be more cost effective to purchase this equipment outright,” it was stated.
By having its own televising equipment, the city will be able to eliminate the downtime on construction projects. It will also be able to get real-time information for engineering and emergency situations.
